In the quiet shadows of verdant trees, the end and beginning of Choshu's history rest in eternal peace.

Interred here at Kozan Gravesite are the final three lords of Choshu domain, who brought the Meiji Restoration to completion: the 13th lord Takachika Mouri, the 14th Mototoku, and the 15th Motoaki. Takachika is remembered as the famous "Shosei-ko"—the "assenting lord"—who replied "I assent" to every proposal from his able retainers, liberating brilliant minds like Shinsaku Takasugi and Kogorou Katsura to shape the clan's destiny. He was the enlightened ruler who elevated Choshu to the center of the Meiji Restoration.

The Imperial Bronze Monument before the graves was erected by imperial decree of Emperor Meiji himself—the highest honor bestowed upon a feudal lord. The stone pathways here are known as "nightingale floors," designed to ring distinctly beneath each footstep. Unlike the five-tiered pagoda style of the Mouri family graves in Hagi, these tombs take the simple, mounded form of traditional earth. That very simplicity conveys a profound weight and dignity.

Stand before these graves and contemplate the rulers who led Choshu's 360,000 koku through the tempest of revolution. Their quiet rest speaks to an age of transformation that continues to shape Japan today.
